From Spring 2023 to Summer 2024, I had the amazing opportunity of working full-time at KUTV (Salt Lake City's CBS affiliate). In my day-to-day job, I was part of the studio crew. In this position, I was responsible for lighting, the teleprompter, audio, and floor direction on varying shifts. A few months into my time at KUTV, I began training as a news director, which allowed me to code and piece together newscasts.
Besides performing these tasks each day, I also got to experience life in a newsroom each shift. I got to see how all the pieces of a story come together. It begins with a call to our tipline, then it becomes a news story, producers spend hours perfecting their scripts, reporters and photographers go out to the scene and shoot a story, editors put the packages together, directors code and call the shows. All these pieces come together and work hand in hand to create a form of large-scale media seen by thousands each hour.
I am so thankful for all I got to learn during my time at KUTV, and I would not trade this hands-on experience in a corporate setting for anything.
